Mat: Its Uses and Importance

Mat is a generic term for a piece of fabric or flat material which is generally placed on the floor or any flat surface for support and protection. The materials used are numerous; but the principal substances are straw, sedge, flags, husks, hemp, rushes, leaves of the Palmyra palm, of the coconut palm and of the screw pine, the munja or munj grass and allied grasses. Some (like doormats) are usually made from tough, long-lasting material such as coir, Palmyra (palm tree) fibres and stalks, nylon, rubber, cloth, or aluminium and other metals. Others like anti-fatigue mats, the range of common materials for its manufacturing includes vinyl, wood, pvc tubing, rubber, pvc closed cell foam, polypropylene, nitrile rubber.

Mat also differs by composition. There is a so-called one-piece mat which is usually used on the permanent basis. Real and synthetic materials are used for its production. It can be a form of handicraft or factory-made and its standard shapes are rectangular, square, round and elliptic. They are usually made from a variety of sizes and colors. There is also the so-called modular mat, also known as interlocking floor mat produced using the "jigsaw puzzle" structure. Unlike one-piece mat, modular mat consists of numerous elements that are easily and seamlessly assembled. Compared to other types of mats, interlocking mat has several sizes, depending on the amount of pieces in one kit. It is a good solution for non-rectangular areas where standard shape mat is helpless. Interlocking mat is commonly used on a one-time or temporary basis like fitness centres and sports competitions, trade shows and conferences. It also requires less storage place and can be easily transported.

Doormat is a flat, usually rectangular object placed immediately outside or inside the entrance to a house, buildings/offices, to allow people to easily scrub or wipe the soles of their shoes before entering.

Bath mat is used on the floor of a bathroom to provide a warm non-slip surface and to absorb small amounts of water like a towel.

Place mats or serving mats are flat piece of fabric or other material used on a table at which dishes and plates will be located during a meal. It provides a thermal and physical barrier between that which is placed on the table and the table itself--for instance, to stop hot objects from marring the table's finish.

Car mats are designed to help provide protection for a vehicle. They are ultimately there to keep the car looking clean. It has two kinds, carpet car mats and rubber car mats. Carpet mats are generally tufted and have a rubberised anti slip backing, while rubber car mats are heavy duty and higher durability.

Anti-fatigue mats are designed to minimize back pain, foot pain, weariness, stress, etc., when the work of a person requires standing for a long time on hard floor surface. It is one of the approaches to prevent injuries, caused by working in a standing position. This type of mats is recommended by Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This is commonly used in factories, plants, in hospitals and clinics during surgeries to cover the floor near surgical tables to minimize surgeons fatigue resulted from continuous standing, during trade shows for floor covering and in housekeeping, especially for kitchen floors to alleviate fatigue during cooking.

Decoration / Art Terms are decorative border placed around a picture to serve as a frame or provide contrast between the picture and the frame.

Outdoor and Indoor Activities are smaller pad of material used to protect a surface from the heat, scratches, etc., of an object placed upon it, like beach mats and pool mats.

General Sporting Terms are large pieces of thick padded material put on the floor as a surface for wrestling, judo, or gymnastic sports.

Clothing, Personal Arts & Crafts / Knitting & Sewing are the solid part of a lace design.
